The Hawaii Gridiron League kicked off its 2013 Season with two great games that turned into some great defensive battles. In Game #1 the Pearl City Paniolos and the Waikiki Stingrays squared off to officially kickoff the season. Both teams showed huge improvements from last season but with two solid defenses on the field, to go along with both teams having new quarterbacks under center, it’s no wonder both offenses struggles offensively. This physical battle came down to the fourth quarter before Chris Ganigan found WR Ty Jarrett crossing the back of the endzone for a 12 yard and the first touchdown of the HGL 2013 Season. The Paniolos’ Alonzo Chopp sacked Stingrays QB Ben Newton on their next possession to put Pearl City up 8-0. Waikiki staged a last minute drive that fell short when a pass intended for a wide open Iosua Fiso was too high.
In Game #2 it was the Defending Hawaii Gridiron League Champions the Honolulu Volcanoes taking on The Tribal Warriors in the HGL Game of the Week! Both teams struggled to find any rhythm offensively with the Volcanoes not able to connect with open receivers and the Tribal Warriors unable to protect their QB from the pass rush of the returning #1 defense in the league. That pass rush resulted in an interception by Zac Anduha late in the 2nd quarter that he returned for a 58 yard touch giving the Volcanoes a 7-0 lead heading into the half. In the 2nd half it was the defenses that took over again until late in the 4th when the Volcanoes, behind the rushing of RB Hercules Sula, marched 62 yards to score the game clinching touchdown and a 14-0 win.
